OFW - Overseas Filipino Worker

Saturday, February 14, 2009 0 comments

OFW or Overseas Filipino Worker is a term coined for Filipinos or Pinoys working abroad.

The lack of well-paying jobs to compliment the high cost of living in the Philippines urges the OFW to seek for greener pasture outside of the country. Un-employment, under-employment, political / social dissatisfaction and poverty are just some of the many reasons why they opt to work abroad.

OFWs are also regarded as the modern day hero in the Philippines. It was admitted by the government and the local economists that the remittances being sent back by the OFWs thru their family saves our dying economy. For now, it is the remittances which have largely helped keep the Philippine economy afloat.

Until now the number of Filipinos seeking jobs abroad are relevantly increasing.

According to the last released data (May 23, 2008) by the National Census and Statistics Office (NCSO).

“The number of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) who worked abroad at anytime during the period April to September 2007 was registered at 1.75 million. This number represents an increase of 15.3 percent over the estimated 1.52 million OFWs in April to September 2006. Of the total OFWs during the period April to September 2007, 92.4 percent (1.61 million) were Overseas Contract Workers (OCWs) or those with existing work-contract abroad. The number of OCWs in April to September 2007 went up by 16.6 percent over the 1.38 million OCWs estimated for the same months in 2006.”

For sure, the number will still dramatically increase if the Philippine economy will not improve and the labor industry cannot generate substantial jobs to the public.

OFW Station aims to be a partner of our OFW and those who are aspiring to be one, by providing substantial information over the Internet.

OFW Station is a brain-child of husband and wife tandem of Allan and Cielo. Allan is currently working as an Overseas Foreign Worker (OFW) in the far land of Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. While Cielo also known in the blogosphere as Brown Pinay, has been constantly giving inspiration and first hand experiences about sacrifices, gains and struggles of an OFW and their family in her blog. For almost 6 years now, they have been a member of the Pamilyang OFW.

Thru this long years of being away, Allan and Cielo has realized the importance of using the technology to get that much needed information. Thus OFW Station was born.
